There should be police that take people’s cars when they do stuff like this.

“Sorry sir, you mistreated your car, you are hereby sentenced to 3 months on a Huffy.”

Meh, just a heat shield. I have ripped plenty of those off.

I have ripped off a couple too. Ripping one of in the course of an unexpected gravel stage is fine.

But, IMO driving around with it hanging off is neglecting the car and possibly dangerous to other drivers.

I had to stop someone to tell them their spare tire was dragging on the ground.

Ha - my college roommate lost his muffler on his accord that way; drove into a parking spot, backed out and it pole-vaulted/folded under the back of the car.. “what was that?”

My experience is that police do the opposite. Most recently when I got rear ended my bumper cover was shoved up into the wheel well and the whole exhaust was bent so it was hitting the ground. The cop was all “Go ahead and drive home, I need to get you off the highway so I can take other calls”.

“You realize that that bumper cover is more likely than not to rip off and who knows what’s going to happen with the exhaust is anybody’s guess...you’ll be answering a call for a car hitting debris within a mile of here if I do that”

“Oh...well, are you sure? I mean it’s bad, but it’s not that bad you can probably make it.”

Luckily a truck from the highway department showed up then and we used a pry bar to pop it up and bend the exhaust so it wasn’t actively dragging anymore cause I don’t think he was going to change his mind and I was definitely not driving it where I could strew large debris on an interstate and potentially kill someone behind me.
